Many people dream of starting their ‘own thing’, but very few ever take the plunge. It’s scary, and there are no guarantees that you’ll ever get it off the ground. At the Ctrl Tower, we’re on the runway, getting ready for lift-off, and boy what a journey it has been so far!
Oh, the people you will meet!
One of the greatest perks of starting our own thing has been the people we’ve met along the way. Fellow travellers on the start-up journey. The solo sailors, the movers, the shakers and of course, the rainmakers.
Winning the MTN App of the Year Award in October 2018 and being selected for the Grindstone Accelerator programme has given us the chance to get up close and personal with fellow innovators shaking up the status quo. Sharing successes, failures, and learnings with visionary start-ups who inspire and motivate us to keep pushing forward and chase our dreams.
Learn from the best
You’re never too old to learn, and we learn from the best. The Grindstone programme also allows us to tap into a few of South Africa’s smartest and brightest; Knife Capital‘s Keet van Zyl, Andrea Bohmert and their very knowledgeable partners.
Because it’s easy to get caught up in the detail and lose sight of the bigger picture, we created our own advisory panel which includes Pieter de Villiers, Kobus Sieberhagen, Johan van der Walt, Mike Joubert and AJ Coetzee. A group of smart minds we get to bounce ideas off, and a constant source of fresh perspectives.
Building our team
As with any start-up, our founding team wore many hats during the early phases, and we had to get comfortable with handling tasks out of our comfort zone. We understand our strengths and weaknesses though, so for the tasks, we couldn’t handle we called on some outside help from a few superheroes like Alta Nel, Dan Nash, Masthead, 4i, Polymorph and Wolf +Halo.
Family and friends were also roped in because where would any start-up be without them? They’re along for the ride to support, encourage and cheer us on, but also to keep us humble with honest feedback and constructive criticism.
By 2018, as our internal team started to grow, we realized another one of our goals, and that is job creation. Through angel investors at first, then fueled by a minority share buy-in by Santam, we started to expand our team of specialists. This meant we could focus on the future and our core offering, the app, instead of worrying about funds.
So, who are we?
We are passionate and excited about the future, we believe in the enabling power of tech, and we believe in our offering. We believe it will change the way people do insurance for the better. It will simplify things and remove the anxiety and uncertainty people have around car and household insurance. We keep each other motivated and we move forward as a team. The mantra that’s kept us going is that we’re better together and in the words of that nineties one-hit wonder, ‘If there is a problem, Yoh we’ll solve it!’
