Is your home winter-ready?

By Ctrl 13 June 2025 2min read

With the cold comes the need to warm up and get those heat-generating devices firing on all cylinders again. Unfortunately, that also means increased risk. Let’s take a look at how to keep your home safe now that cooler weather is imminent.

Thank Goodness for Solar

Due to load shedding, many South African homeowners have opted to install solar panels and inverters. This is a great way to keep the lights on and help relieve the strain on the grid. From a risk perspective, however, homeowners must update their insurance to ensure they are covered for any related events that could cause damage. A valid Certificate of Compliance needs to be obtained from the electrician who installed the system. You can read more about the importance of cover for your solar installation here.

Gas is Good

Trusty old gas appliances like heaters and stoves have been around for a long time, but they still need a Certificate of Conformity following the Occupation Health and Safety Act for you to be properly insured in case anything goes wrong.

Clearing out and Gearing up

Then there are the more obvious things you can do, like cleaning all chimneys, gutters and drains, and covering exposed pipes to prevent them from freezing and bursting. Geysers older than 10 years typically need some TLC around wintertime when they’re working overtime.
